Since becoming the capital in 1561, Madrid has witnessed royal scandals, religious persecution, and political upheaval. You’ll hear the stories of the inbred Habsburgs and the shadowy Inquisition, followed by the debauchery and intrigue of the Bourbon kings and queens. The narrative continues into the 20th century, with tales from the Franco era and the atmosphere of Madrid when Hemingway lived and wrote here.

Wander tucked-away corners and narrow alleys where “murder most foul” once shocked the city, and enjoy a well-paced mix of storytelling and stops. Along the way, we pause for freshly baked sweet cakes and visit three authentic taverns to savor quality tapas and local drinks.

Two adult couples and a two year old went on a walking tour of Madrid in the late morning with Historian Drake-Jones.
